The Mercedes Benz Superdome!?

Of course like everyone else I gotta sound off regarding the newest development, and in the minds of some, the latest perversion in regard to our beloved Louisiana Superdome.

Mercedes Benz has bought 10 year naming rights to the Louisiana Superdome which will now be referred to as the Mercedes Benz Superdome. Many are up in arms and don't like it, and I must admit yesterday morning when i was listening to WWL Radio, I was among you. However, the idea(not the name) is growing on me.

My first reaction was a negative reaction, as is typical of most human beings with change. I texted in to WWL for the first time sounding off with my comments and thoughts regarding this horrible new change abreast in New Orleans.

It sounds kind of weird and I will say that Chris Rose is correct when he mentioned yesterday that this has more national and international implications and importance than local. I would've been all for one of my friends' recommendations, 'Rick's
Caberet Superdome.' Or in my opinion the Tipitina's, Palace Cafe, or Popeye's Superdome would've been more fitting from a local standpoint. At least we would've been keeping it local and keeping it about New Orleans, heck even if it would've been Pat O' Brien's Superdome it would be better for our city.

But at the end of the day, despite my wrangling and objections, it is good for the Saints and New Orleans. No longer does the Louisiana taxpayer have to foot the bill for the Dome.

The only solution I think would be better would be if we in Louisiana would do what the Green Bay Packers fans do out in Wisconsin and buy shares of the New Orleans Saints and make the team even more our own. That would be a great solution, one that would really instill pride and loyalty to our team, our community, and our boys (as if we could get any more loyal or prideful for our Saints)

That option unfortunately is not on the table because we all know Mr. Benson is not about sharing with the rest of us the profits of our team. So until then, let's get used to it and learn to love it. Hey, I guess change can come to a city and a state that refuses to change. As for me, I'm still gonna refer to it as the Louisiana Superdome regardless, ... or as my friend James reminded me yesterday, it will still be known as 'The Dome' to New Orleanians.

Se la vie. At the end of the day, I realize we have all gotten a little bourgeois when it comes to our Saints. Several years ago we would've given anything to get to the playoffs, or the Super Bowl...including selling the naming rights to the dome to Hanes Underwear. Now that we are world Champions we strut around and forget where this franchise was a few years ago after Katrina; in danger of being moved to San Antonio.

Now, more than ever the New Orleans Saints are here to stay. WHO DAT!

Bayou Perspective thanks you for your support! All the best and God bless.
